Currently [early 2025CE], the threshold for a question’s inclusion here is n=1, resulting in two (2) questions & their answers being added in the past… since I registered the domain.
- Am I available for work-for-hire projects?
- Absolutely; however, only the “good” sort of work-for-hire, where you’ve got an awesome sandbox and an amazing set of toys therein and you’ll pay me to come in and play with them. In that case, I am 100% down on board with you keeping the rights and potentially making mad bank after I walk away with a flat fee, because they’re your toys in your sandbox.
- I am not, however, down for the sort of work-for-hire where I build the sandbox and make up the toys and then hand everything over for a flat fee. (Or rather, the “flat” fee in such cases had better be a mile-high mesa of money.) For the creative types, I’m protective of my babies; for the capitalists, I don’t sell off income-generating assets without asking a substantial premium.
- How can I get a copy of [story]?
- Check the Bibliography – if it was published online, it should be linked. (Now, if the link’s still good after N years… I don’t check ’em all that often, so I ‘unno.) Otherwise, a quick Google ought to turn up wherever it’s available. If for whatever reason you aren’t able to access it – the magazine’s closed up shop, their website’s vanished, and the link’s dead; it’s blocked in your region; buying the ePub or PDF requires a credit card and you refuse to be a part of the Machine; etc. – hit up the Contact page and let me know.
- To wit, if we’ve neither met in person nor corresponded via a non-public channel, I’m loath to send over a copy of anything that’s still in print & available, unless there’s some sort of extenuating circumstance like one of the above. I’ve no issue with self-publishing or Creative Commons or their like, but right now the traditional model of a publisher paying for certain rights works well for me, and having signed a contract it wouldn’t be cricket for me to turn around and start handing out copies.
